The best way to get to know the central part of Virovitica – Podravina County, is to ride the cycling route “Slatina circle”. Slatina is the second biggest city in the County, and prides itself with its own cultural and wine tradition. There, in 1864, the first Croatian sparkling wine was produced, which, in addition to many other parts of the rich history of Slatina, can be found in the Museum of Nativeism. By the way, it is important to know that in Slatina is the largest living organism of Eastern Croatia – a mammoth tree – that was planted in 1807, and it grew to a height of 62 meters.
The “Slatina circle” route is 39 km long and almost completely flat. It runs from the center of Slatina to the north and the village of Bakić, and then through the villages of Gornji Miholjac and Španat towards Višnjica. We are now in the Sopje municipality, which is famous for its rich ethnological, folklore and natural heritage. Here is Pustar Visnjica, and this is perhaps the most beautiful place you will visit in this race, so take time and stop in this lush green oasis of green.
National winner in the choice of the European destination of excellence – Pustara Višnjica is an old farm, surrounded by lime, chestnut and pine trees, where you can see horses, the mouflons and fallow deer. Here is also the biggest production of batata (sweet potatoes) in our country. After sightseeing we recommend a visit to their restaurant where, with excellent dishes, you can also enjoy excellent wines from Orahovica – Slatina vineyard. If you are so fond of wanting to stay longer, Pustara Višnjica offers comfortable accommodation. Višnjica is a magical place from where you can see the Papuk slopes in the distance and feel the scent of the River Drava, which flows quietly a few kilometers further.
The route continues to the villages of Novaki, Vaška, Kapinci, Sopje and Medinci, and back towards Slatina, where it ends. Whether you like Slavonia, its old estates and the gentle villages, its smells and colors, drive along the long straight roads of this trail and meet Slavonia from first hand, that is, with a bike.
